Absa speeds up debt review with AI-powered OCR
Absa Bank has significantly reduced the time it takes to process debt review documents after deploying an artificial intelligence (AI) and optical character recognition (OCR) solution within its Debt Review division, helping streamline one of South Africa’s most document-heavy banking processes.
The bank said the technology has increased document indexing efficiency by 41% since it went live in late June, allowing all newly received debt review documents and emails to be processed within a single business day. The improvement is expected to benefit consumers undergoing debt review by shortening processing times and reducing administrative delays.
Debt review has traditionally depended on large volumes of paperwork submitted by multiple parties, with employees manually capturing and verifying information before applications could proceed. This process often resulted in lengthy turnaround times, intensive administrative work and a greater likelihood of data-entry errors.
Furthermore, Absa’s new AI-powered OCR platform automatically extracts information from standardized documents and transfers it into internal systems, reducing the need for manual data capture and enabling cases to move through the workflow more quickly. The bank also said the platform has been designed to support more complex document types as automation capabilities expand.
According to Kendrick Chauke, Absa’s National Manager for Debt Review, the introduction of the technology has allowed employees to spend less time on repetitive administrative tasks and more time handling work that requires judgement and specialist expertise and has also boosted productivity in the company.
The implementation also supports Absa’s broader digital transformation strategy, where artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to improve operational efficiency and customer service across the bank.
Robert Benvenuti, Chief Information Officer for Data and Applied AI at Absa, noted that the new capabilities represent another step in the bank’s efforts to integrate AI to improve customer outcomes while strengthening operational performance.
Additionally, the bank plans to explore additional opportunities to expand automation across its operations as financial institutions continue investing in AI-driven technologies to improve service delivery, reduce processing times and enhance operational resilience in South Africa’s banking sector.
