The Hub Karen expands wellness offering through fitness partnerships

The Hub Karen is expanding its wellness offering through fitness partnerships and community activities designed to bring exercise and family experiences into the shopping centre. The approach featured at Hub Fit @ The Hub Karen Wellness Day on 10 October 2026, where the mall partnered with Nyumbani Active to host fitness sessions, mobility activities and other wellness experiences.

The event included a morning workout and activities for families. It builds on the Hub Fit platform launched in April with Decathlon, Smart Gyms, Healthy U and Nairobi Sports House.

The Hub Karen makes wellness part of its offering

Ruth Wako, Sales and Marketing Manager at The Hub Karen, said wellness is one of the mall’s key pillars alongside food. She explained that the partnership with Nyumbani Active was intended to give shoppers opportunities to participate in fitness activities while experiencing other services at the centre.

Wako said the mall wanted to create activities that encourage visitors to spend more time at the centre. The programme also reflects its family-focused approach, with activities designed to accommodate parents and children during the same visit.

The plan allows parents to participate in fitness sessions while children take part in their own activities. Families can then continue their visit by eating, shopping and enjoying the mall’s other facilities.

Wako confirmed that the wellness day would not be a one-off event. She mentioned a cycling event planned for the following weekend and another fitness day expected later in October. She also expects more tenants and shoppers to participate in future editions.

Nyumbani Active brings fitness beyond the gym

Elijah Ongeri, Head of Operations at Nyumbani Active, said the partnership aimed to introduce fitness activities to people who do not regularly go to the gym. The organisation helped curate the wellness day’s programme, which included running and spin activities.

Nyumbani Active also offers free bodyweight training programmes that people can follow at home or at work. Ongeri said the organisation supports people preparing for competitions, including HYROX, and provides access to coaches.

For beginners, he recommended starting at a manageable level, either with guidance from a coach or through home-based training. He said people should find an approach that suits their circumstances and allows them to continue exercising.

The organisation also runs competitive fitness events. Ongeri discussed a strength competition planned for 7 November, which he referred to as the Full Strength Edition. He described a team-based format featuring strength and conditioning challenges, with awards for the leading teams.

Recover X focuses on fitness recovery

Laura Omogo, owner of Recover X, said her business supplies portable recovery equipment for athletes and gym enthusiasts. The products she discussed included sauna blankets and compression equipment for the body and knees.

Omogo said recovery should form part of a training routine alongside exercise, nutrition and sleep. She described herself as a hybrid athlete who combines running and other cardiovascular activities with strength training, while balancing exercise with work and motherhood.

She also discussed the growth of fitness communities around running, CrossFit and HYROX, which she sees as opportunities for businesses serving active consumers. Omogo said she attends fitness events and looks at recovery technologies used internationally, with the aim of identifying ideas that could be introduced to Kenya.

Recover X has a development plan, although Omogo said future expansion would depend on available finances. Her business serves people seeking equipment to support their recovery routines as they pursue fitness goals.

More fitness activities planned

Wako said The Hub Karen intends to continue hosting wellness activities, with further events planned for October. She expects future editions to attract additional tenants and shoppers interested in participating in fitness and wellness sessions.

The partnership brings together the mall’s family-oriented offering, Nyumbani Active’s fitness programmes and Recover X’s recovery equipment business. Each contributes a different element to the activities available to visitors.

The Hub Fit wellness day provided a setting for participants to explore fitness activities and learn about services offered by the participating businesses. The next events will extend the programme as The Hub Karen continues developing its wellness offering.
