NITDA launches taskforce as Nigeria moves to implement sovereign cloud strategy

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has launched the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative Implementation Taskforce (NSCI-ITF), moving Nigeria’s sovereign cloud strategy into a new phase focused on implementation and coordinated action.

The taskforce will help bring government institutions, regulators and other key stakeholders closer together as Nigeria works to build a more secure, resilient and competitive cloud and digital infrastructure ecosystem. By strengthening these partnerships, the country can create an environment that supports innovation, improves digital security and positions Nigeria for sustainable growth in the digital economy.

The inauguration follows the development and launch of key instruments under the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative (NSCI), covering regulation, technical standards, assurance and investment. The frameworks are designed to guide cloud adoption, improve data governance, strengthen infrastructure security and create better conditions for investment in Nigeria’s cloud and data-centre industry.

According to NITDA, the NSCI-ITF will act as the main multi-stakeholder platform for coordinating the implementation of the initiative. Its responsibilities will include supporting regulatory alignment, coordinating institutions, putting NSCI frameworks into operation and addressing challenges that cut across different areas of government.

The taskforce will also monitor implementation progress and support efforts to increase cloud adoption, expand digital infrastructure, build local technical capacity and attract investment into the sector.

NITDA stressed that the taskforce will not replace existing regulators or government agencies. Rather, it will provide a platform for enhancing coordination and regulatory coherence while allowing each institution to continue carrying out its responsibilities under its statutory mandate.

The National Sovereign Cloud Initiative is part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to strengthen digital sovereignty and protect critical digital assets. It is also intended to create an environment where local technology companies can participate more actively in the cloud economy while maintaining access to global technologies and investment.

Successful implementation of the initiative could increase Nigeria’s domestic cloud and data-centre capacity, improve the resilience of critical digital infrastructure and encourage greater private-sector participation in the sector.

With the inauguration of the NSCI-ITF, NITDA is now shifting attention from developing the sovereign cloud framework to coordinating its implementation and delivering tangible outcomes for Nigeria’s digital infrastructure ecosystem.
