South Africa Becomes the First African Market to Welcome Disney+

Walt Disney’s streaming platform Disney+ has made it’s entry into the African market. Disney+ launched in South Africa earlier this week, adding to the growing list of competitors that include Showmax, Nextlfix and Amazon Prime Video ow available in the continent.

In January, The Walt Disney Company which runs Disney+ announced that it was expanding to 42 new countries, including six in Africa—Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia,  and South Africa.

This arrival is an important vote of confidence to the continent that has traditionally been the last recipient of such services. Increased penetration of the internet across Africa has also encouraged investors to inject more products into the continent.

At a monthly subscription fee of $7.4, Disney+ will be South Africa’s most affordable streaming option. Amazon Prime Video charges $8.55 per month while Showmax costs $14.14 per month.

DSTV has been South Africa’s most prominent pay-on-demand platform but has been rapidly losing subscribers. It reportedly lost over 100,000 high-value subscribers last year following the scrapping of some sporting channels from its package. However, it’s still advantaged by the fact that you don’t require internet connectivity unlike Disney+, Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

Disney+ launched in US, Canada, and the Netherlands in 2019. It has about  137.7 million subscribers spread across 64 countries.
