Vodacom, UJ and AWS widen South Africa’s AI talent pipeline through student hackathon
Vodacom, the University of Johannesburg (UJ), and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are expanding efforts to develop South Africa’s artificial intelligence talent through a student hackathon that turns technical knowledge into practical solutions to solve real-world challenges.
The AI for Africa Hackathon Challenge was held at Vodacom World in Johannesburg and attracted more than 150 student sign-ups, allowing undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop AI-driven solutions addressing issues such as maternal health, education, gender-based violence, youth unemployment, agriculture, water security and community safety.
The challenge marks the first milestone in a partnership announced in July 2026 that brings together industry expertise, academic research, and cloud technology to prepare students for careers in AI and data science.
“The first project launched as part of this partnership focused on UJ Master’s students within the university’s Centre for Applied Data Science. With this hackathon, which more than 150 students signed up for, this partnership is now also reaching undergraduate and master’s students pursuing further education to equip them to be at the cutting edge of developing Africa’s AI capabilities.” Said Charlotte Kepadisa, Managing Executive of Big Data, AI and Robotic Process Automation at Vodacom Group.
Kepadisa said the initiative aims to give students practical experience in applying AI to problems affecting communities and businesses.
“Building Africa’s AI capabilities requires investment in people as well as technology. Through the AI for Africa Challenge, students apply what they have learned to real-world problems, gaining practical experience and confidence to develop their ideas. Supporting these students reflects Vodacom’s commitment to nurturing talent. This commitment extends to our people strategy, through which we invest in learning, development and skills programmes that prepare our employees for the opportunities of tomorrow.” She added.
The hackathon also exposed students to the broader considerations involved in developing technology, including business models, software development and the potential impact of their solutions.
Badiswa Motsa, an 18-year-old first-year Business Information Technology student at UJ, said the experience offered a broader perspective on application development.
“Currently we’re working on a project where we’re developing an app, and my lecturer suggested we take part in the hackathon as we may learn something that can be used in developing our app. When we came here, we actually thought this was more about coding, but there’s actually different levels to this because you have to think about the business side, the back-end, the font-end, and how is this actually going to help people.”
Fellow first-year student Dione Gwara, 19, said he joined the challenge to build on his coding experience and showcase his skills. Makabelo Pitso, a first-year BCom Information Systems student, said she wanted to understand how hackathons operate and how classroom learning can be applied to practical industry challenges.
Beyond the hackathon, the Vodacom-UJ partnership supports learning programmes developed jointly by industry and academia, postgraduate research and industry mentorship through UJ’s School of Consumer Intelligence and Information Systems and its Centre for Applied Data Science.
Research projects include investigating autonomous AI systems that could identify, analyse and respond to cyber threats across telecommunications networks. Other work is examining blockchain-based approaches to digital identity management and the prevention of identity theft.
AWS contributes cloud infrastructure, computing resources and AI and data technologies that enable students and researchers to develop, test and refine their solutions.
The collaboration reflects a broader push to strengthen Africa’s digital skills pipeline by connecting university education with industry requirements, while giving emerging talent opportunities to develop technologies relevant to the continent’s social and economic needs.
