Airtel Money puts Sh37m into Marigat schools

Airtel Money Kenya and ChildFund have started construction of classrooms, toilets and water facilities worth Sh37 million at two schools in Marigat, Baringo County, in a project targeting 1,500 learners.

The project, funded through the Airtel Africa Foundation, will benefit Marigat Integrated Day and Boarding Primary School and Marigat Special School for the Visually Impaired.

It will deliver 13 classrooms, 29 toilets, an ICT lab, a renovated library, a boys’ dormitory and a 30-point handwashing station.

The schools will also get extended water pipelines, solar-powered pumps and storage tanks, alongside disability-friendly toilets separated by gender.

“At Airtel Money, we understand the importance of creating access and opportunity, and that commitment extends beyond financial services to supporting the communities we serve,” said Airtel Money Kenya acting managing director Bonke Michael.

“For the community in Marigat, we are addressing some of these practical barriers so that learners can spend more time focusing on their education.”

Nearly 80 percent of Baringo is classified as arid and semi-arid land, leaving many communities without reliable water.

The county government is targeting average water access of 52 percent by the end of 2027.

Airtel Kenya managing director Djibril Tobe said the project would also equip the schools with devices and internet connectivity.

“We want learners and teachers to have the tools they need to access information, build digital skills and prepare for the opportunities of tomorrow,” said Mr Tobe.

ChildFund said the investment would help remove barriers that keep children with disabilities out of school.

“For many children in underserved communities, particularly those living with disabilities, barriers to quality education can be significant,” said Eric Oyoo, ChildFund Kenya’s programmes and sponsorship director.

“These investments go beyond infrastructure; they create opportunities for children to participate fully in education.”

The Marigat schools are part of a wider partnership targeting more than 2,000 learners in four public schools across Baringo, Wajir and Garissa counties.

Other beneficiaries include Garissa School for the Deaf and Catholic Integrated Primary and Junior School in Wajir.

The project comes as telecoms and mobile money firms step up spending on education and digital access programmes in underserved counties.

ChildFund reaches about 3.1 million children and families in Kenya through programmes in education, health, water and child protection.
