Why Samsung's 2027 foldable lineup may be bigger than anyone expected
Samsung’s 2027 foldable lineup could become the company’s biggest Galaxy Z portfolio yet if a new supply-chain leak proves accurate.
A report, citing industry insiders, claims Samsung is preparing five foldable phones for next year, including the Galaxy Z Fold9, Fold9 Ultra, Flip9, a second wide Fold model designed around entertainment, and a new-generation TriFold with broader availability. The report builds on a direction that Samsung has already been pursuing with the Galaxy Z Fold8, making this look more like the next step in an existing plan than a sudden change.
The biggest addition is the rumored second wide Fold, a device that would sit alongside the standard Fold instead of replacing it. Earlier reports suggested Samsung might trim its foldable range, particularly around the Flip series, but this latest claim points in the opposite direction.
Why Samsung’s foldable strategy keeps expanding
Samsung’s recent product decisions help explain why this report carries weight. After the Galaxy Z Fold8 launched, the company reportedly raised production targets following strong early demand, showing confidence in premium foldables rather than cheaper alternatives.
That thinking has appeared elsewhere in Samsung’s roadmap. TechTrendsKE’s earlier reporting on the company’s projected 2027 flagship family outlined a broader premium portfolio that already included the Fold9, Fold9 Ultra, Flip9 and a second-generation TriFold. The new ETNews report adds another Fold variant, expanding the foldable family from four devices to five instead of rewriting the roadmap altogether.
The Fold lineup now appears to be following a pattern that resembles Samsung’s flagship phone strategy, where different models serve different buyers instead of chasing a single universal design.
A wider Fold is becoming more than a design experiment
The rumored entertainment-focused Fold stands out because Samsung has already changed how its foldables are shaped.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 introduced a wider passport-style design that made typing, reading and multitasking feel more natural than the taller Fold models that came before it. That hardware decision placed greater emphasis on everyday usability instead of simply making the display larger.
The latest leak suggests Samsung could take that idea further by creating a Fold built specifically for watching videos and playing games.
A 4:3 inner display works well for documents, web pages and photography because those activities naturally fit a squarer canvas. Films, streaming content and many games are designed for 16:9 or even wider cinematic formats, which leave noticeable black bars on a 4:3 screen. A wider Fold would reduce that letterboxing and give Samsung a clearer distinction between productivity and entertainment devices.
The Fold lineup is becoming role-specific
Samsung had already begun separating the Fold series before this latest rumor surfaced.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 established itself as the everyday flagship foldable, while the Fold8 Ultra pushed further into premium territory with a more square inner display and stronger emphasis on cameras and productivity features.
Adding another Fold between those products would give Samsung three distinct positions within the same category:
-
Galaxy Z Fold9: the mainstream productivity foldable.
-
Entertainment Fold: optimized for video and gaming.
-
Galaxy Z Fold9 Ultra: the premium flagship with top-tier hardware.
That approach creates more room for buyers who want a foldable tailored to how they actually use their phones.
The Flip survives while the FE disappears
One part of the leak resolves months of conflicting speculation.
Earlier rumors suggested Samsung might retire the Galaxy Z Flip altogether. Instead, the report claims the Flip9 remains on track while the rumored Flip FE has effectively disappeared.
The reason is less certain. Rising component costs, including memory prices, may have made an affordable foldable harder to justify, while premium Flip models offer stronger returns for Samsung’s hardware business.
The TriFold gets another chance
Samsung’s first TriFold arrived in limited numbers and felt closer to a technology showcase than a mainstream product.
The next version is expected to reach more markets, although pricing is unlikely to become any easier to swallow. Tri-fold phones remain one of the most expensive smartphone categories, and Samsung still faces competition from Huawei, which has drawn attention with its own approach to multi-fold hardware.
Broader availability would give Samsung a stronger chance to put the device in front of more buyers, even if it remains a niche product.
What this means for Samsung and the foldable market
If Samsung launches five foldables next year, the move would reinforce its position as the company willing to experiment across multiple form factors while other manufacturers focus on fewer premium devices.
Honor has leaned into thinner foldables, Oppo has prioritised lighter designs, Huawei has pushed tri-fold hardware, and Google’s Pixel Fold continues to rely heavily on software integration. Samsung appears to be carving out another advantage by offering several foldables that target different habits instead of asking one device to satisfy every customer.
The report remains an unconfirmed leak, and product names, specifications and launch plans could change before production begins. Even so, the broader direction matches Samsung’s recent decisions around the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra, making the possibility of a five-device Galaxy Z family easier to picture than it would have been a year ago.
