Nokia 8110 4G gets WhatsApp support

The Nokia 8110 4G banana phone now supports WhatsApp. The phone was launched in February last year and came pre-loaded with popular apps including Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Search, Facebook and Twitter.

HMD Global, the manufacturer of phones under the Nokia brand have announced that the phone now supports the messaging app, which is available for download in its store.

The Nokia 8110 4G has been available locally since June 2018 for Ksh. 8,000, but lacked the popular messaging platform.

Mark Misumi, HMD Business Manager East Africa said HMD Global said in a press statement that “Millions of people stay in touch with their loved ones through messaging apps like WhatsApp, and we wanted to bring this to fans of our retro classic, the Nokia 8110. Now, you can keep up to date on your family and friends’ groups, share messages and never miss a moment, all with the style and cool-factor of a true Nokia classic.”

It runs on the Smart Feature OS powered by the KaiOS platform, which brings to feature phones such smartphone features as Google’s suite of applications from Google Assistant to Maps and Search, plus apps like Facebook.

“We’re delighted that WhatsApp is now available on the widely popular 8110, enabling users to easily communicate with friends and family, both near and far,” said Sebastien Codeville, founder and CEO of KaiOS Technologies. “Our mission is to provide affordable digital services to everyone, and this announcement marks a big milestone towards our goal.”

The Nokia 8110 4G feature phone comes with the elegantly curved slider design and a 2.45-inch display with a resolution of 240 pixels by 320 pixels. It is powered by 1.1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 processor to keep it running flawlessly and it comes with 512MB of RAM.

The phone packs 4GB of internal storage which unfortunately cannot be expanded. For the camera, the Nokia 8110 4G packs a 2-megapixel primary camera on the rear, no selfie camera for selfie lovers. The device is powered by a 1500mAh removable battery and measures 133.45 x 49.30 x 14.90 (height x width x thickness) and weighs just  117.00 grams.
