Twitter is shutting down Fleets due to low usage

Twitter has announced that it will be shutting down Fleets on August 3rd. Twitter says it is killing this feature due to low usage just eight months after rolling it out to everyone.

lya Brown, Head of Product, Brand & Video Ads at Twitter said they built Fleets as a lower-pressure, ephemeral way for people to share their fleeting thoughts.

‘’We hoped Fleets would help more people feel comfortable joining the conversation on Twitter. But, in the time since we introduced Fleets to everyone, we haven’t seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation with Fleets like we hoped. Because of this, on August 3, Fleets will no longer be available on Twitter.’’ He said in a blog post.

Fleets allowed users to share fleeting or transitory thoughts, and after 24 hours, they’ll disappear from view. The disappearing stories feature was a response to Instagram and Snapchat, where it’s quite popular. As much as we didn’t expect Twitter to kill Fleets, this announcement shouldn’t come as a surprise.  Fleet’s uptake among Twitter users has really been slow since the product went live.

Twitter says it is shutting down Fleets but will create other ways for people to join the conversation and talk about what’s happening in their world.

Starting August 3, Twitter users would only see active Spaces which are live audio chat rooms at the top of their timelines.

Twitter says it’s also making some updates on the composer for traditional tweets to feature more camera editing features from Fleets, like text-formatting and GIF stickers over photos.
