Safaricom Adds 22000 Customers on its Fixed Internet Service

...maintaining top spot with 35.6% market share

Safaricom ’s fixed internet service added a total of 22,008 net subscribers in Q1 2020-2021, according to the latest data from the Communications Authority of Kenya.

The recently released Sector Statistics report shows that Safaricom’s fiber maintained its lead in the fixed data market between July and September 2020.

In the period under review, Safaricom closed September 2020 with 229,406 subscriptions, commanding a 35.6% market share. The telco’s serial competitor in the fixed data market, Wananchi Group, maintained the second spot despite recording a minute number of net additions in the quarter.

Wananchi Group only added 632 net subscribers from the previous quarter. It’s now second place with 202,237 total subscriptions representing a 31.6% market share – five percentage points behind market leader Safaricom.

Safaricom surpassed Wananchi Group last year in the April to June quarter after gaining 25 percent fixed broadband subscribers. As of June, Safaricom controlled 33.5% of the market, followed closely by Wananchi Group with 32.5% market share.

Wananchi Group’s insignificant additions in the quarter give Safaricom peace of mind at the top spot. Like in the previous quarter, Jamii Telecommunications ranked third. JTL added 9,421 subscribers which bumped up its market share a bit to 19.8% from 19.1% previously.

Here’s how the general market looked at the end of September 2020:

Name of Service Provider Total number of Internet subscriptions Market share in percentage
Safaricom PLC 229,406 35.6
Wananchi Group 202,237 31.4

Telkom Kenya 4,572 0.7

Generally, the CAK says, “the Internet/data market experienced positive growth with rising dependence on digital platforms for work, learning, healthcare, shopping and entertainment.”

Total fixed data subscriptions in the country rose to 644,816 from 619,579 in June.
