Mastercard and Samsung bring smartphone payments to more Moroccan consumers

Mastercard has partnered with Samsung to introduce Samsung Pay in Morocco, allowing eligible Mastercard cardholders at participating banks to make contactless payments using compatible Samsung smartphones and smartwatches.
The launch expands mobile payment options for consumers in the North African country, eliminating the need to carry a physical bank card when making supported transactions. The service is powered by Mastercard’s tokenization technology, which replaces sensitive card information with a unique digital token to protect payment credentials during transactions.
Through Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES), Samsung Pay incorporates tokenization alongside authentication and risk-based security measures to provide additional protection when consumers make mobile payments.
The launch builds on Mastercard’s efforts to expand digital payment infrastructure in Morocco by working with banks and technology companies. It also supports the company’s global target of tokenizing 100% of online transactions by 2030.
“At Mastercard, we believe the future of payments should give people more choice, greater convenience and confidence in every transaction. Supporting Samsung Pay in Morocco is another important step in expanding access to secure digital payment experiences, underpinned by our tokenization technology: Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES). Beyond introducing another way to pay, our ambition is to make digital payments faster, simpler, and more secure.” Said Mohamed Benomar, Country Manager of North West Africa, Mastercard.
Samsung Pay will be available to eligible customers of participating financial institutions, while merchants that accept supported contactless payments will be able to accommodate transactions made through compatible Samsung devices.
The service is also expected to give participating banks another digital payment option to offer their customers as mobile-based transactions become increasingly integrated into everyday commerce.
“With Samsung Pay, we want making a payment to feel as natural as using your smartphone or smartwatch. This launch marks another step in our commitment to providing Galaxy users with innovations that are simple, secure, and genuinely useful in everyday life. We would like to thank participating banks and Mastercard for their trust and collaboration, and we are proud to contribute to this digital transformation.” Added Hongseok Lee, President, Samsung Electronics Maghreb Arab
Furthermore, Mastercard and Samsung plan to unveil a joint campaign in Morocco to encourage the adoption of Samsung Pay through promotional activities and consumer education on making secure mobile payments.
