MediaTek Plans to Tackle Qualcomm’s New SDM 855+ with Cheaper Helio G90, a Gaming-focused Chipset

It is no secret that smartphone gaming is increasingly becoming popular. Recent reports have indicated games accounted for 35% of global downloads in the last quarter, but they made up nearly 75% of consumer spend across iOS and Google Play. As a result, it is not surprising seeing semi-conductor companies pushing for ideally gaming-focused mobile CPUs.

Barely two weeks after Qualcomm announced their new gaming-focused overclocked chipset, Snapdragon 855+, their close competitor MediaTek has also planned to launch a new CPU with a similar intent. MediaTek has scheduled to launch their new gaming chipset, Helio G90 on July 30th.

Since Qualcomm’s new overclocked chip will not be powering any mid-range devices, at least anytime soon, it will be interesting to see what capabilities MediaTek’s chip will have to counter Qualcomm’s offerings.

Although rumors suggest Helio G90 maybe merely an overclocked Helio P90 SoC –it is not yet clear what specs the new chipset could pack on-board. But since MediaTek relies on either Power-VR or Mali solutions for their GPU’s, we expect the new CPU paired with either Power-VR GM9446 or Mali’s G76 GPU.

And to make the perfect gaming-focused CPU, MediaTek may include some enhancements and tweaks alongside.

The company plans to launch its new CPU in an event in China next week.
