Meta has launched Muse, an artificial intelligence agent designed to perform tasks on behalf of users, manage longer-term projects and help coordinate personal goals.
Unlike conventional AI assistants that primarily respond to prompts, Muse is built to take actions across online services. The agent can send emails, book travel, complete online forms and make purchases, while continuing to work on certain tasks after users leave the application.
Muse is powered by Muse Spark, which Meta describes as its most capable AI model for real-world agentic tasks. The system can operate through a dedicated browser that allows it to interact with websites and online services. When a task requires a user’s input or approval, Muse can pause and return to the user. It can also adjust ongoing tasks when circumstances change.
Beyond individual requests, Meta is positioning Muse as an agent capable of managing broader objectives. The system can coordinate time and resources, create action plans and modify them as users’ requirements change. It is also designed to retain information from conversations that users choose to make available to it.
For example, information from a recipe saved on Instagram can be used to create a grocery list. Muse can also suggest menus for events and factor in dietary requirements when helping users organise activities and invitations.
Privacy and security are key components of the new AI agent. Muse runs inside Muse Secure VM, a dedicated cloud-based virtual machine intended to isolate the agent, user information and credentials from other agents. Meta said Muse does not have direct access to users’ passwords or payment information.
Internet access is controlled by a separate security system called Sentinel, which reviews and authorises the agent’s online activities. Actions considered sensitive, including sending emails and completing purchases, require approval from the user. Users can also determine which applications Muse can access and set the permissions available to the agent.
For purchases, Muse can use Link, Stripe’s digital wallet, through a one-time-use card intended to prevent merchants from receiving a user’s actual card details. Meta said Muse is the first AI agent covered by Link’s purchase protections. Support for Shop Pay and 1Password is also planned.
Meta said users will be able to review an audit trail showing Muse’s activities and can disconnect services or modify permissions when necessary. Users can also request that Muse forget specific information and opt out of having their interactions used to train Meta’s AI models.
According to Meta, Muse conversations and information stored within its virtual machine are kept separate from the company’s advertising systems.
Meta is also preparing Muse Confidential VM, which it plans to introduce later this year. The feature will encrypt the entire virtual machine using a key controlled exclusively by the user. Meta said this architecture would prevent the company itself from accessing the encrypted data and conversations.
Muse is initially being rolled out in the United States across iOS, Android and the web. Meta also plans to extend the agent’s capabilities to its AI glasses. The company said Muse will be available at no cost to most users, while subscription options will be offered to users seeking additional capabilities.
The launch marks Meta’s move toward AI agents capable of executing tasks across digital services rather than simply generating responses to user requests.
