MTN Nigeria marks 25 years with 90 million connections and a push for digital inclusion
MTN Nigeria has commemorated 25 years of commercial operations in the country, with the telecommunications company turning its attention to closing persistent connectivity gaps and bringing more Nigerians into the digital economy.
The anniversary comes as MTN reports more than 90 million people are now connected to its network, a significant growth from the limited telecommunications access that characterized Nigeria’s market when the company commenced operations 25 years ago.
MTN Nigeria CEO and Managing Director Karl Toriola said the company’s growth had taken place alongside major changes in how Nigerians communicate, work, learn and do business.
According to Toriola, the impact of the telecommunications sector can now be seen well beyond subscriber numbers, with connectivity supporting businesses, keeping families in contact, expanding access to education and allowing creators to reach audiences beyond Nigeria.
He said MTN Nigeria had continued to invest in its network and services through periods of economic growth and challenges, while acknowledging the contribution of government agencies and regulators to the development of the country’s telecommunications industry.
Toriola also credited the company’s employees, board, business partners, shareholders and communities for supporting its growth over the past quarter-century.
The anniversary also highlighted MTN Nigeria’s social investment activities through the MTN Foundation, which has funded initiatives in areas including healthcare, education, youth development and economic empowerment.
Despite the growth in connectivity, Toriola said Nigeria still faces significant gaps in access to reliable and affordable digital services. He identified digital inclusion as a key priority for MTN Nigeria as it begins its next phase of operations.
He said the company would focus on connecting more Nigerians to the digital economy while creating opportunities for the country’s large and growing youth population.
“The 25th anniversary therefore comes as both a celebration of MTN Nigeria’s contribution to the country’s telecommunications evolution and a renewed focus on expanding digital access and opportunities.” He added.
