Huawei Unveils Digital Blueprint to Modernize Kenya’s Energy Sector

Huawei has launched a comprehensive digital blueprint aimed at modernizing Kenya’s power sector, strengthening grid resilience, and accelerating the adoption of clean energy. The “Digitalization White Paper for the Energy Industry” was unveiled on Wednesday during the Huawei Kenya Energy Summit 2025 in Nairobi.

The document provides a detailed roadmap for integrating smart technologies to help the country sustainably meet its growing energy demands.

The white paper outlines a four-pronged strategy for the sector’s transformation. This includes the creation of digital green power plants using end-to-end digital twins and remote intelligent control, as well as enabling intelligent grid inspection through automation and smart monitoring.

Furthermore, the blueprint details plans for multi-source, self-healing distribution networks that leverage digital technology for autonomous fault detection and recovery. It also emphasizes the coordination of multiple energy sources, such as smart campuses, to optimize overall efficiency and sustainability.

Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. J. Opiyo Wandayi, who officially opened the summit, commended the initiative. “Huawei Kenya Energy Summit 2025 marks a major step in driving Kenya’s energy digitalization journey,” he stated. “Kenya remains dedicated to achieving universal access to clean, reliable, and modern energy by 2030 powered by innovation, collaboration, and sustainable technology.”

The launch brought together key players from Kenya’s power sector to explore the use of smart grids, AI, and cloud computing to enhance grid stability.

Benjamin Muoki, Manager of Telecommunications and Service Delivery at Kenya Power, highlighted the utility’s own ongoing digital transformation. He emphasized Kenya Power’s investments in a 100G national fiber backbone, SCADA automation, and cloud-based systems to enhance operational efficiency, customer experience, and network reliability.

Samuel Cheng, Managing Director of Enterprise at Huawei Kenya, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to the continent’s energy transition. “Digitalization and innovation are redefining the energy landscape, with Kenya standing at the forefront of this transformation,” Cheng said. “Together with ecosystems partners, Huawei is shaping a smarter, more sustainable energy ecosystem for generations to come.”

The white paper offers actionable insights intended to guide stakeholders in modernizing infrastructure and driving sustainable growth in line with Kenya’s national energy goals.
