Kenyans across different parts of the country are facing significant difficulties in obtaining power tokens following a widespread outage with the Kenya Power token generation system.
The outage has been reported from Friday night and extended through to Saturday with Kenyans unable to receive their prepaid electricity tokens through the usual channels, including mobile money services, online platforms, and USSD codes.
Despite attempts by customers to reach out to Kenya Power’s support services, resolution to the issue remained slow, leaving many in the dark about when the system will be restored.
It was only until Saturday evening that Kenya Power acknowledged the outage and advised users to access the tokens via the USSD code or the MyPower app. Strangely, all these platforms are also not working.
‘’We wish to inform all our pre-paid customers that we are experiencing a delay in relaying token messages,’’ the statement read.
‘’Customers are advised to access their tokens by dialling *977# > 1. Prepaid Services (Tokens) > 2. Latest Tokens > Select Metre or Add Metre. Alternatively, tokens can be accessed via MyPower app that is available on Android and IOS platforms,’’ Kenya Power said.
Despite this announcement, users reported that alternative methods were still non-functional. Even the USSD code, which for years had been a reliable fallback, is failing, and so is the MyPower app which has remained unresponsive.
The outage has led to growing frustrations among users on social media whose electricity meters are running down with no way to top up.
By late Saturday night, there were still no guarantees from Kenya Power that the problem would be fully resolved.
This is also not the first time Kenya Power has experienced issues with its token system.
