NCBA customers can now buy Kenya Power tokens via 977#

NCBA Bank customers can now buy Kenya Power prepaid tokens and pay postpaid electricity bills directly from their bank accounts through the utility’s *977# USSD service.

NCBA says it is the first bank in Kenya to give customers this option. Account holders can now pay for electricity without first moving money to a mobile wallet or using a separate payment channel.

To use the service, customers dial *977#, follow the prompts and select NCBA as their payment option.

“At NCBA, our focus is on making banking work around our customers’ lives,” said Dennis Njau, group director for retail banking at NCBA Group.

“This integration with Kenya Power’s *977# platform is a practical example of that commitment, delivering a simpler way for customers to manage an essential everyday expense.”

The bank says the service responds to growing demand for faster ways to handle day-to-day payments, for both households and businesses.

Most Kenyans buy electricity tokens through M-Pesa, and banks are working to keep more of their customers’ routine transactions within their own accounts.

The launch comes a week after South Africa’s Nedbank completed its acquisition of a 66 per cent stake in NCBA, making the Kenyan lender a subsidiary.
