The year is coming to an end, and so is the fourth quarter. But Counterpoint Research has some exciting analytics to share about the smartphone market in Q3. In a recent report, the firm detailed the most popular phones that have been moving faster globally in the third quarter of the year.
At the top is Apple’s iPhone XR, which emerged as the top-selling model globally in the entire quarter. That is interesting since Apple launched the phone back in September 2018.
In fact, iPhone XR has been the top-selling model globally in every quarter since Q4 2018. Counterpoint notes that this has been the best-selling phone from Apple ever in all markets.
Apple’s recently announced iPhone 11 was ranked as the fifth best-selling smartphone of the quarter. With its price, this is no surprise.
Samsung also performed well in Q3. The South Korean tech giant had three of its A-series devices on the list. Samsung Galaxy A10 was Samsung’s best-selling phone, ranking second globally. Samsung Galaxy A50 follows as the third best-selling phone, and Galaxy A50 ranked seventh.
The research firm cites the success of Samsung’s A-series devices has been due to their competitive specs and design features, plus affordable pricing and Samsung’s strong brand perception.
The Chinese company Oppo also had three of its devices emerge in the top ten list. The phones are all under the company’s A-series. They include the Oppo A9, A5s, and A5.
Huawei’s P30 was the only premium android device featured in this list. Xiaomi’s Redmi 7A was also part of the quarter’s popular devices, thanks to the strong sales made in the Indian market. The report notes that over half of the total sales of the Redmi 7A were made in India in Q3.
Another interesting part is the decline in the number of flagship devices in the list. Compared to a similar time last year, the list composed of five flagship devices, but this time, we only have three.
Mid-tier and budget devices are increasingly becoming popular, which has been cited to the improving capabilities of devices, thanks to the trickling down of premium features in this segment.
Due to the upsurge in the number of mid-tier and budget devices, the combined wholesale revenue of the top 10 models declined by 30% YoY.
