Huawei officially launched its foldable device – Mate X, in China. This came just several weeks after its close competitor Samsung unveiled its foldable device, the Galaxy Fold formally.
With a new form factor, the Mate X costs an outrageous 16,999 yuan (about $2,400). With that fee, you will not only get yourself a 5G capable device but also with a sizeable 8-inch display when opened. The folded form delivers a smaller 6.6-inch display instead.
In addition to that, forget the Google Mobile Services, which is as a result of the on-going US ban. The ban also implicates the device is free from any US-made components. Under the hood is Huawei’s own Kirin chipset paired with a Balong 5000 5G modem. The company started selling its foldable device in its online store in China.
The Mate X runs on Google’s Android (open-source) splashed on top with EMUI 9 skin. Other features include 8GB RAM, 512GB internal storage, Kirin 980 SoC, and a 4,500mAh battery with 55W fast charging tech.
Unlike the Galaxy Fold, Huawei Mate X has a new way of folding. When folded, it exposes the flexible panel. Repairing the broken screen will cost ¥2,699, which is around $380.
As per now, Huawei has not mentioned any plans on a global launch. But that is no surprise since the same has been the case for the Mate 30 series. Although the company launched its latest flagship devices in a few selected countries away from China.
