Health Innovator Meditronic LABS Partners with MoH

Kenyans living with chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure are set to benefit from a partnership between the Ministry of Health and health systems developer Meditronic LABS. The partnership under Meditronic’s Empower Health program is set to connect more patients to health information, clinical support and medication need.

Meditronic Labs is a health systems innovator developing community-based tech-powered solutions for underserved populations. The organization has multiple entities under its umbrella including a foundation, a social business and non-profit and for-profit subsidiaries all geared towards improving provision of healthcare to underserved populations.

The cooperation with the MoH is expected to leverage Meditronic’s technology to offer screening, diagnostics, case management as well as risk analysis. The program has brought on board other partners including World Diabetes Foundation, Kenya Defeat Diabetes Association, PATH, Novo Nordisk, Novartis, Viatris, and the NCD Alliance of Kenya.

“ Our joint mission is to strengthen the health system here in Kenya by creating programming that addresses chronic diseases-which are a major public health concern here in Kenya.” Said Ruchika Singhal, President of Meditronic LABS. “Empower Health connects the healthcare system by providing custom technology to support community health workers and partners with patients and local leaders to enable better patient outcomes.”

The newly signed partnership with the Ministry of Health is aimed at reaching more than 300,000 people across all the 47 counties. The Empower Health program has so far helped to screen 210,000 people and enrolled 40,000 more persons living with diabetes and/or hypertension. The program has onboarded 52 facilities with a plan to expand across the country in the next three years.

Launched by the Ministry of Health in 2017, the Empower Health program has been in operation in the counties of Makueni, Kakamega and Nyeri. The plan to expand into other counties will see more deserving patients benefit from a widespread network.
