Cassava Technologies rehires Dan Kwach to lead AI data centre push
Cassava Technologies has rehired former Africa Data Centres (ADC) East Africa managing director Dan Kwach to lead its artificial intelligence (AI) data centre business. He returns about 10 months after leaving for a senior job in Madagascar.
Mr Kwach will serve as Executive for AI Data Centres at ADC, Cassava’s data centre unit.
He announced the move on LinkedIn, saying he was “happy to be back home” in Nairobi after a short stint abroad.
The appointment comes as data centre operators across Africa compete to build capacity for AI workloads, which need far more computing power and electricity than traditional hosting.
“Exciting and quite humbled to take up a new role as Executive for AI Data Centres at a time when more questions than answers around AI make for global headlines,” Mr Kwach said.
“One thing is for sure, we either get a seat on the table when this assessment is happening or be on the menu as a continent.”
He left ADC in December 2025 to become deputy chief executive of STELLARIX, a Madagascar-based firm. That ended a run of about 20 years with the group.
Mr Kwach said his time in Madagascar had shown him that Africans share “a common desire and ambition for this great continent.”
He said the challenges facing the sector had not changed. He argued that technology investments must serve Africa’s economic priorities, including enterprise growth, sustainability, security, trade, job creation and productivity.
“Tech for Good must align to Africa’s socioeconomic priorities in enabling and spurring growth in the Enterprise sector, ensuring innovation and sustainability go hand in hand,” he said.
Mr Kwach joined the group in 2006 at Kenya Data Networks (KDN), which later became Liquid Telecom Kenya.
In 2009, he was the founding project manager for KDN’s data centre business. He oversaw the construction of what was then billed as East Africa’s first Uptime Institute-accredited Tier III data centre, in Nairobi.
He later became general manager of the East Africa Data Centre brand. In April 2021, he was promoted to managing director for East Africa at ADC.
His return comes as Cassava, the pan-African technology group founded by Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa, expands into AI infrastructure.
The group has partnered with American chipmaker Nvidia to roll out AI factories, which are computing facilities powered by graphics processing units (GPUs), across Africa, starting in South Africa.
