Nikos Angelopoulos leaves MTN for Nedbank CIO role
Nedbank has named Nikos Angelopoulos as its new Group Chief Information Officer (CIO), with the appointment set to take an effect on 1st September 2026. The leadership change comes as the South African Banking Group continues to strengthen its technology capabilities and advance digital transformation strategy.
Angelopoulos joins Nedbank with more than 30 years of global technology leadership experience across Europe, the Middle East and USA. His appointment is underscoring the bank’s focus on expanding the role off digital technologies, data, Artificial Intelligence and cloud-based innovations in delivering modern banking services and improving operational efficiency.
Prior to joining Nedbank, Angelopoulos served as MTN Group’s Group Information Officer, where he was overseeing technology strategy, governance and investment across telecommunications company’s operations in 16 markets. During his tenure, he also played a key role in shaping technology initiatives that supported the group’s digital ambitions across multiple regions
In Nedbank, he will have the responsibility to ensure that he drives the technology strategy of the bank through the enterprise-wide digital transformation initiatives and ensuring the incorporation of AI, Cloud Computing, Data Management, among other new technology trends. He will also play a pivotal role in driving innovations that enhance the customer experience and business performance.
The appointment forms part of Nedbank’s ongoing drive to create a financial services institution of the future that flexibly adapts to changing customer needs and a fast-changing digital imperative in how financial services are accessed. With renewed competition in banking, banks are investing heavily in technology leadership to digital innovation at scale, enhance cybersecurity and drive more value from data-led decisions.
With his solid background in both banking and telecoms internationally, Angelopoulos is expected to support Nedbank with its technology priorities as they play out across the long term and enable it to scale digital solutions. The bank continues to position technology as a key enabler of sustainable growth, with investments in digital platforms, artificial intelligence and data capabilities still central to its business transformation agenda.
