Tecno has unveiled its Next-Gen Borderless Concept Phone, a prototype that the company says features a 0mm bezel display with no visible borders around the screen. The device will make its public debut at IFA 2026 in Berlin this September, where the company is expected to explain the engineering behind what it describes as a true edge-to-edge display and demonstrate the technology publicly for the first time.
According to Tecno, achieving the design required advanced internal stacking, new screen packaging techniques and a structural redesign of the handset. The company has not disclosed the technical details behind those changes, but says it reworked the phone’s internal architecture to eliminate the visible black border that typically surrounds a smartphone display.
Promotional images released alongside the announcement compare the concept phone with Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro, highlighting a noticeably thinner border around the display. The prototype still features a centrally positioned hole-punch front camera, suggesting Tecno focused first on removing the bezel while retaining a conventional front-facing camera system.
The race to reduce smartphone bezels has shaped handset design for more than a decade. Flagship devices from Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and other manufacturers already devote most of their front surface to the display, leaving only narrow borders around the edges. Earlier attempts to create bezel-free smartphones, including the Sharp Aquos Crystal and Xiaomi Mi Mix, pushed displays closer to the frame but still relied on visible bezels or thicker sections of the handset to accommodate internal components.
Those remaining borders serve practical purposes beyond appearance. They help reduce accidental touches while a phone is being held, provide structural protection for the display and create space for components that connect the screen to the rest of the device. As manufacturers continue to reduce bezels, they typically need more sophisticated display packaging and increasingly complex internal layouts, making the engineering process more demanding and expensive.
Tecno says its redesigned internal structure and display packaging allow the visible bezel to be removed while preserving the phone’s functionality. The company also says the concept includes advances in touch sensitivity, although it has not explained how edge interactions are managed on a display that extends to the very edge of the device. Questions around durability, accidental touch prevention and manufacturing at scale are likely to be answered once the prototype is demonstrated at IFA.
The company has built a reputation for using concept devices to showcase technologies that later influence commercial products, giving its latest prototype greater significance than a one-off design exercise. While there is no indication that the Next-Gen Borderless Concept Phone will reach the market in its current form, Tecno says the technologies developed for the project are intended to support future flagship devices, extending beyond the display to areas such as touch responsiveness and overall user experience.
IFA 2026 will provide the first independent look at whether Tecno’s 0mm bezel claims hold up outside promotional material. If the company can translate the concept into a durable device that can be manufactured at scale without compromising usability, it could represent another step in the industry’s effort to bring truly edge-to-edge smartphone displays into commercial products.
