As BAKE Awards Voting Opens, Green Shift and Econews Bring Climate Reporting Into the Mix
The recognition for Econews and Green Shift arrives as environmental coverage increasingly attracts attention from startups, policymakers, investors, and younger digital audiences
Two sustainability-focused media brands under TechTrends Media Kenya have made the shortlist for the 2026 BAKE Awards, placing climate reporting and environmental storytelling alongside some of Kenya’s most recognized digital creators.
Econews earned a nomination in the Environmental Creator category, while the Green Shift Podcast received recognition in both Environmental Creator and Audio Creator. Public voting is now open and runs until June 4 ahead of the awards gala scheduled for June 6 in Nairobi.
The nominations arrive after a judging process that reviewed submissions for originality, consistency, audience engagement, publishing quality, and overall impact. Organizers said creators were assessed through an independent evaluation stage before the public vote opened.
For TechTrends Media, the shortlist reflects a broader expansion beyond traditional technology coverage into climate journalism, sustainability reporting, and podcast production. Over the past year, the company has built a growing editorial focus around renewable energy, green finance, conservation, sustainable mobility, and climate innovation across Africa.
Green Shift has increasingly positioned itself as an audio platform examining how policy, business, and technology intersect with environmental issues. The podcast features conversations with founders, industry executives, sustainability advocates, and policymakers working across the climate and green economy sectors.
Econews, meanwhile, has developed into a dedicated sustainability publication covering environmental policy, clean energy investment, ESG reporting, agriculture, and conservation. Its reporting has tracked how businesses and governments across the continent are responding to climate financing pressures and shifting energy priorities.
This year’s BAKE Awards nominee list points to a wider change inside Kenya’s digital publishing industry. Environmental reporting and niche knowledge platforms are now competing in the same creator economy space as entertainment channels, lifestyle brands, and mainstream podcasts.
The Environmental Creator category includes:
- Anthony Ochieng
- Beyond the Trails Kenya
- Econews
- Green Shift
- Nyika Silika
Green Shift also appears in the Audio Creator category alongside:
- GearHaus
- So This Is Love Podcast
- Ongeza Volume Podcast
- TMI Podcast
Readers who want to support the two platforms can cast their votes through the official BAKE Awards voting portal before the deadline.
“Being nominated in categories focused on environmental storytelling and audio publishing reflects the growing audience for sustainability reporting in Kenya and across Africa,” said Nixon Kanali, Host and Founder of TechTrends Media following the shortlist announcement.
Voting is available through the official BAKE Awards website under the Environmental Creator and Audio Creator categories.
How to Vote for Econews and The Green Shift Podcast at the BAKE Awards 2026
Voting for the BAKE Awards 2026 begins through the official public voting portal, where readers and listeners can support their preferred creators across the shortlisted categories.
Voters first need to enter their name, email address, and phone number on the platform before moving to the category selection page.
Once inside the voting section, Econews and Green Shift appear under the Environmental Creator category. Green Shift is also listed separately in the Audio Creator category.
After selecting the preferred nominees, the system prompts users to verify their email address before the submission process can continue.
BAKE then sends a verification code to the registered email address, which voters must enter on the platform to validate the ballot.
Once verification is complete, users can submit their final selections across the available categories.
Each account is limited to one vote per category during the voting period, which remains open until the official closing date ahead of the June 6 gala event in Nairobi.
