Safaricom Pushes First Major Update to Stabilize My OneApp

Safaricom has released version 5.1.5 of My OneApp on the Google Play Store, addressing key user complaints in what the telco is framing as a direct response to customer feedback.

The update restores the Favourites tab within the transactions section, allowing users to save and quickly access frequently used contacts, and brings enhancements to the Frequents section for faster navigation to commonly used services.

The update arrives in the wake of a damaging launch. My OneApp, unveiled at Safaricom’s Decode 4.0 developer summit on April 1, 2026, was designed to consolidate M-Pesa, MySafaricom and Bonga into a single platform. But within days, the rollout had descended into a public relations crisis. Safaricom publicly acknowledged that the app had login issues and that most financial mini-app services were not working, with a resolution described as underway.

The core issues included login failures, frozen transfers, sluggish performance, and unexpected logouts. The most acute complaints came from Kenyans abroad, who found that My OneApp requires a Safaricom SIM with active Safaricom mobile data to log in. For diaspora users and travellers who rely on Wi-Fi or foreign SIMs, the requirement effectively locked them out of their M-Pesa accounts entirely.

A further source of frustration was the forced migration via automatic updates. Users who had stable experiences on previous versions were transitioned to My OneApp without adequate onboarding or fallback options, leaving many stuck with a platform they could not reliably use.

Safaricom issued a formal apology on April 16, acknowledging the poor experience and singling out roaming and diaspora customers for particular regret. The company said its teams were working around the clock to resolve the issues.

Version 5.1.5 signals that the rapid iteration Safaricom promised is now underway. The telco has indicated that further updates will follow as it continues refining the platform.
