Samsung Galaxy S23 series with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC officially launched


Samsung has officially unveiled its latest devices in the S Series comprising the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23.

Featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, Samsung says the new devices mark a new era of Samsung Galaxy’s ultimate premium phone experience.

The Galaxy S23 series also brings the latest flagship features such as Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, 120Hz dynamic AMOLED display, 200MP main camera on Ultra, and support for up to 45W fast charging.

“Galaxy S23 Ultra and the entire Galaxy S series lineup are the new standard-bearers of a trustworthy premium smartphone experience. We’re redefining peak performance by merging power and lasting innovation in devices that have less environmental impact,”  said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Experience Business at Samsung Electronics.

Let’s look at each of the devices in this series.

Galaxy S23 Ultra

The start of the show was the Galaxy S23 Ultra with a number of new features and specs.  It comes with a 6.8-inch QHD+ display with 3088 x 1440 pixels resolution, Dynamic AMOLED panel, and 120hz screen refresh rate.

The smartphone is powered by a customized version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor coupled with up to 12GB RAM and 1TB of internal storage. We’re getting it in three variants – 8GB RAM + 256GB storage, 12GB RAM + 256GB storage, 12GB RAM + 512GB storage, and 12GB RAM + 1TB storage.

Samsung claims that the processor offers 40 per cent faster GPU and NPU, which are exclusively optimized for the Galaxy device.  On the software front, the phone runs on Android 13 with custom One UI 5.1 skip on top.

For the battery, the  Galaxy S23 Ultra is backed by a 5000mAh battery with support for wired as well as wireless fast charging out of the box.

For the optics, the phone features an in-house developed 200-megapixel camera coupled with two 10-megapixel telephoto lenses, and 12-megapixel ultrawide angle lens. On the front, the Galaxy S23 Ultra includes a 50-megapixel selfie camera that sits inside the hole punch display in the middle. Samsung claims that the S23 Ultra offers improved low-light camera performance when compared to its predecessor and also a better video shooting experience.

The phone also has support for the S-Pen and comes in four new colours, including phantom black, green, cream and lavender.

Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus

The Samsung Galaxy S23 and the S23 Plus, both offer similar designs, with the Plus featuring a bigger screen.

The Galaxy S23 comes packed with a 6.1-inch display, while the S23 Plus features a 6.6-inch FHD+ display with 2340x 1080 pixels resolution.

For performance, both the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor coupled with up to 8GB RAM + 512GB of internal storage. The base model or Galaxy S23 comes in three variants – 8GB RAM + 128GB storage, 8GB RAM + 256GB storage and 8GB RAM + 512GB storage. The S23 Plus, on the other hand, is only available in two variants – 8GB RAM + 256GB storage and 8GB RAM+ 512GB storage. The phones run on Android 13 with custom One UI 5.1 skip on top.

We’re getting a triple rear camera system with a 50-megapixel primary camera coupled with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide and 10-megapixel telephoto lens on both phones.

For the battery, the Galaxy S23 is backed by a 3900mAh battery, while the S23 Plus features a 4700mAh battery with support for fast charging and also fast wireless charging support out of the box.

Both phones are available in four colour options, including phantom black, green, cream, and lavender.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series Pricing and Availability in Kenya

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 512 GB will retail at Ksh.209,999, the Galaxy S23 Ultra 256GB will retail at 195,999 KES, the Galaxy S23+ 256 GB will retail at 154,999 KES, while the Galaxy S23 256 GB will retail at 135,999 KES .

Below is the pricing for all the devices the Samsung Galaxy S23 series. They will be available at Samsung authorized dealer stores including Safaricom from 1st March 2023.

  • Galaxy S23 Ultra 512GB at Ksh.209,999
  • Galaxy S23 Ultra 256GB at Ksh.195,999.
  • Galaxy S23+ 256GB at Ksh154,999
  • Galaxy S23 256GB at Ksh.135,999

Pre-orders start from 2nd to 28th February 2023.

Samsung’s local office says those who pre-order the Galaxy S23 Ultra will receive an automatic upgrade from a 256 GB to 526 GB device storage worth 20,000 shillings, and they will receive 10 GB data each month for a one-year period (Safaricom Network only).

Those who pre-order the Galaxy S23+ and the Galaxy S23 on the other hand will receive a free silicone case as well as 10GB of data each month for one year. The Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 will also be eligible for Samsung Care+, which offers among other things 1-year free screen protection.
