Facebook’s New App Lets Users Rap to Premade Beats

I bet you didn’t see this coming. But neither did I.

Facebook has launched a new app that lets users create raps over pre-made beats and share them. The new app, called Bars, has diverse “professionally-created” beats plus “studio-quality vocal effects.”

Bars permits a maximum of 60-seconds per rap, and instant feedback can be collected by sharing the video inside the app in a TikTok-style feed, reports TechCrunch.

Unlike TikTok-style hearts, Bars uses “Fire” emojis to show love for a specific rap. And you can give other rap videos as many “fires” as you like.

The app offers three levels of experience at signup – beginner, intermediate and advanced. For beginner level rappers, Bars includes an auto-rhyme dictionary. Advanced users get Freestyle mode with auto-suggested words.

It also equipped with audio and visual filters, and it automatically suggests rhymes while writing lyrics.

Bars aims to help artists focus on their craft – rap – instead of heavy priced audio equipment and production.

“I know access to high-priced recording studios and production equipment can be limited for aspiring rappers,” says DJ lyler, a hip-hop songwriter and ghostwriter and a member behind Facebook’s Bars.

“So, along with a group of aspiring rappers, we’ve been building BARS: a place for aspiring rappers to create and share their art,” he says.

“Audio production tools can be complicated, expensive and difficult to use. With BARS, you can select one of our professionally-created beats, write lyrics and record yourself dropping bars,” a statement on the app launch reads.

Bars is created by Facebook’s New Product Experimentation (NPE) team, which makes apps for (you guessed it) experimentation. Products from the NPE team may or may not make it to the general public.

With that said, Bars is yet to go into open beta, but you can sign up to secure a spot once available. The app is only available on iOS.

“We’ll be opening up invites in batches, starting with folks in the US, as we continue to improve the experience. You can stay up to date on invites and all things BARS on Instagram.”

Facebook’s NPE team also created an app in the musical scene in 2020 called Collab. Collab lets musicians create songs together from different locations. It was (and still is) an iOS-only app and hasn’t made it to the public yet.
