Safaricom’s digital finance business extends into wealth management with KSh21.1bn in assets

Safaricom reported 2.2 million active customers for its M-PESA wealth management service and KSh21.1 billion in assets under management in the financial year ended 31 March 2026. The figures provide a measure of the company’s activity in wealth management, a part of its digital financial services business that extends beyond payments and money transfers.

The figures appear in Safaricom’s FY2026 Sustainable Business Report, which covers the company’s Kenyan operations. They offer a view of customer participation and the funds managed through the service, although the two measures describe different aspects of its activity: active customers indicate usage, while assets under management measure the value of assets overseen through the service.

The disclosure places wealth management within Safaricom’s broader financial services operation. M-PESA already handles high volumes of transactions across its payments network, while wealth management gives customers another way to interact with financial services through a mobile platform.

M-PESA wealth management records 2.2 million active customers

Safaricom reported 2.2 million active customers using its M-PESA wealth management service during FY2026. The figure indicates the number of customers the company classified as active under its reporting approach, rather than a total for every person who may have accessed the service at some point.

Customer activity is one way to assess the reach of a digital financial service. It provides context for the number of people engaging with the platform, while assets under management offer a separate indication of the value associated with that activity.

The figures should be read together without treating them as interchangeable. A customer count measures participation, whereas the amount managed reflects the financial value of the assets within the service’s reporting scope.

Assets under management provide a measure of customer participation

The company reported KSh21.1 billion in assets under management for the service by the end of the financial year. Assets under management are a value measure, distinct from the number of transactions processed through M-PESA or the total value of payments made across its network.

That distinction is important because payment value can include money moving between people and businesses, with the same funds potentially changing hands more than once. Assets under management, by contrast, refer to the value of assets overseen through the relevant wealth management activity.

Safaricom’s disclosure gives the service two measurable dimensions: 2.2 million active customers and KSh21.1 billion in assets under management. Together, they describe the scale of the activity reported for FY2026.

Wealth management extends M-PESA beyond everyday payments

M-PESA’s payment network and its wealth management service serve different financial purposes. Payments support the movement of money between individuals and businesses, while wealth management concerns the management of assets held through a financial service.

Safaricom’s report presents the wealth management figures alongside other measures of its digital financial services operations. The distinction matters for understanding the company’s range of financial activity without confusing payment throughput with savings or investment assets.

The FY2026 disclosure records 2.2 million active wealth management customers and KSh21.1 billion in assets under management. Those figures establish the reported scale of the service at the close of the financial year and provide a specific measure of M-PESA’s activity beyond transaction processing.
