Paratus expands East Africa connectivity ahead of ITW Africa

Pan-African telecommunications provider Paratus Group is expanding its East Africa footprint through new fibre infrastructure, satellite services and cross-border network connections, as it showcases its progress at the ongoing ITW and Datacloud Africa Conference in Nairobi.

The Group’s Goma-to-Mombasa (G2M) terrestrial fibre route is now live and carrying traffic, while Starlink services have recently launched in Uganda alongside further network interconnections in the region.

Paratus is hosting a welcome reception for customers, partners and industry leaders attending the conference. Senior executives, including group chief technical officer Gert Duvenhage and Paratus Kenya country manager Joseph Kibwott, will represent the company.

The 2,000-kilometre G2M route links Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo with Mombasa on the Kenyan coast, passing through Kigali, Kampala and Nairobi. The route creates an east-west connection and gives access to international subsea cable capacity landing at Mombasa.

Paratus is complementing the fibre route with points of presence and interconnections at data centres and internet exchanges, allowing traffic to move more directly between networks and giving customers more routing flexibility across borders.

The launch of Starlink services in Uganda adds satellite connectivity to the mix, extending options for businesses in areas where fixed infrastructure is limited or unavailable.

“The G2M route is live, our footprint in the region is growing and we are bringing different connectivity technologies together to give customers more choice,” said Kibwott. “For businesses operating across several markets, the value is being able to work with one network partner across countries and technologies.”

Duvenhage said a strong network depended on more than fibre alone. “It is about combining terrestrial infrastructure, data centres, internet exchanges and satellite connectivity to create reliable routes for customer traffic. Paratus is therefore a compelling and strong partner for connectivity in East Africa,” he said.

Paratus is also introducing a new Layer 2 connectivity service over low-earth-orbit satellite for the East African market at the conference, which runs until 10 September. The service is designed to provide secure, private connectivity between offices, branches, data centres and remote sites, allowing organisations to link multiple locations through a single private network.
