Konza, AWS sign MoU to accelerate Kenya’s digital economy

Kenya’s Technopolis Development Authority, formerly known as Konza Technopolis Development Authority, has signed a Collaboration Agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to advance digital transformation, cloud adoption and digital skills development in Kenya.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony at Konza Technopolis that brought together senior leadership from both organisations, government stakeholders and invited delegates.

The Collaboration Agreement establishes four priority areas: business development and market engagement, skills development and workforce enablement, infrastructure and technology alignment, and innovation ecosystem and start-up enablement.

It will support engagement with public sector institutions on cloud-first digital transformation initiatives, professional AWS certification for Technopolis Development Authority staff and Kenyan youth, and access to AWS technical expertise in data management, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The partnership also covers technical leadership and oversight on the establishment of an AWS Outpost at Konza to support hybrid cloud solutions, as well as a Startup and Innovation Centre of Excellence at the technopolis. Startups and scale-ups will gain access to AWS partner and support programmes, including AWS credits and technical mentorship.

Technopolis Development Authority CEO John Paul Okwiri said the partnership marks a significant step in advancing Konza’s vision as a national platform for technology-driven economic development.

“This Collaboration Agreement marks an important milestone in our journey towards steering the country to a knowledge based economy,” he said. “Our partnership with AWS brings together global cloud expertise and Kenya’s ambition to build a resilient, skills-driven digital economy.”

Okwiri added that the collaboration is intended to give innovators, start-ups, businesses and talent access to the infrastructure, skills and opportunities they need to develop solutions that can scale locally and globally.

He said the deal also reflects the Authority’s broader ambition to anchor Kenya’s national digital transformation agenda by positioning the Technopolis as a competitive destination for global technology investment and a catalyst for growth in East Africa’s digital economy.

AWS Public Sector Lead for West, East and Central Africa, Robin Njiru, said the partnership combines AWS’s cloud capabilities with Konza’s growing innovation ecosystem to strengthen digital infrastructure, develop future-ready skills and create room for start-ups and businesses to innovate and scale.

“We have identified immediate areas of action that will realise benefits for Kenyan youth, innovators and technology professionals alike, even as we work on the more structured initiatives under this partnership,” Njiru said.

He added that the partnership positions the Technopolis Development Authority as an important platform for connecting global technology capabilities with Kenya’s innovation and digital economy ambitions, while strengthening opportunities for local talent, enterprises, startups and technology innovators.
