AWS Selects Nine African Organizations for Social Impact Accelerator

Amazon Web Services has selected nine African organizations to join the fourth cohort of its Social Entrepreneur Accelerator, marking the continent’s largest representation yet in the global programme.

The nine organizations, drawn from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Cameroon and South Africa, are part of a broader cohort of 42 social enterprises from 16 countries. The accelerator, run in partnership with Deloitte, supports mission-driven organizations using technology to tackle pressing challenges in education, healthcare, climate resilience and economic opportunity. It offers participants technical training, strategic business support, and access to cloud and artificial intelligence tools. Since its launch in 2023, the programme has worked with more than 100 social entrepreneurs across 34 countries.

Kenya’s representation includes two organizations. KuzeKuze, based in Nairobi, is building digital “education passports” that create lifelong learning records, allowing students’ progress to be tracked and personalized over time. STEM Center Africa, founded in Oyugis, Homa Bay County in 2017 by brothers Dancun (CTO) and Denish Akoum (CEO), runs hands-on STEM programmes covering coding, robotics and 3D design. The organization says it has reached more than 18,000 students, with 90 percent achieving proficiency in tools like Python, Scratch and basic electronics, and is targeting 100,000 learners by 2030 through its two centers in Homa Bay.

Nigeria leads the cohort with three organizations. Sabi Scholar, led by CEO Divine Iloh, is positioning itself as an operating system for African higher education, enabling universities to stand up online degree programmes in as little as 30 days. Kayode Alabi Leadership, founded by Hammed Kayode Alabi, works to reduce inequality among underserved youth through mentorship, education and technology-driven solutions. Wetech Inc., founded by Gabriella Uwadiegwu, builds career pathways for women entering the technology sector through training and employment support.

Ghana’s BASICS International, based in Accra and led by Patricia Wilkins, provides certified digital skills training and broader educational support to underserved children and young people. In Cameroon, EduCloud, founded by Rosius Ndimofor Ateh in Douala, runs cloud and AI workshops designed to bridge academic learning with industry demands. Tanzania’s Fiqra Academy, led by CEO Gerald Revocatus in Dar es Salaam, offers digital skills certification programmes that connect young people to job opportunities through its learning platform.

South Africa’s entry, FunHouse Digital, founded by Ayabulela Yokwana in Bloemfontein, has taken an unusual approach, converting gaming lounges in rural communities into education hubs, with gaming revenue funding free coding and digital literacy classes.

“Africa’s representation in this cohort reflects what we’re seeing across the continent, a generation of founders who don’t wait for conditions to be perfect. They build anyway,” said Jyoti Ball, General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at AWS. “Our role is to ensure they have access to the same world-class cloud and AI technology as any startup in Silicon Valley, and the support to scale impact across borders.”

Participants will spend their time in the programme working alongside AWS and Deloitte specialists to strengthen their business models and expand their use of cloud and AI technology, before joining a global network of social entrepreneurs at the programme’s conclusion.
