Liquid and Taara are expanding wireless optical communication across Nigeria to strengthen business connectivity
Businesses in Nigeria are gaining faster access to high-speed internet as Taara, a graduate of X, Google’s Moonshot Factory, expands its wireless optical communication technology through its collaboration with Liquid Intelligent Technologies.
Over the past two years, Liquid has deployed nearly a dozen Taara wireless optical links across Lagos, enabling high-capacity connectivity for internet service providers, banks, hotels, utility firms and other large enterprises. The technology is also helping improve network resilience in areas where fibre cuts can take days to restore.
The launch comes as demand for reliable enterprise connectivity continues to grow in Nigeria, where expanding fibre networks in densely populated urban areas can be costly and time-consuming.
Unlike conventional fibre, Taara’s technology uses highly focused beams of light to transmit data through the air, allowing operators to establish high-capacity links within days or even hours without trenching, spectrum licensing or extensive civil works.
Commenting on the deployment, Liquid Intelligent Technologies Nigeria Acting Chief Executive Officer Eugene Uka said the technology has significantly reduced deployment times, particularly in areas where laying fibre is difficult.
“Traditional fibre deployments aren’t always possible, especially across difficult terrains. Taara links can often be installed and activated within hours, allowing us to expand connectivity faster while supporting our mission of creating a digitally connected future that leaves no African behind,” Uka said.
Following the success of the Lagos deployment, Liquid is exploring expansion into other Nigerian cities, including Abuja, Ibadan and Kano.
Taara Regional Lead for Africa Bhavesh Mistry said wireless optical communication complements existing fibre infrastructure by giving operators greater flexibility to expand capacity and improve network resilience.
Taara’s Lightbridge platform delivers speeds of up to 20 Gbps over distances of up to 20 kilometres using narrow beams of light. The technology is currently deployed in more than 20 countries with operators including T-Mobile, Airtel, Digicel, Liquid, and SoftBank, helping telecommunications operators extend high-speed connectivity across urban, rural and hard-to-reach areas.
