Samsung Expands AI Skills Training at JKUAT as 180 Students Join Digital Programme

Samsung Electronics East Africa has strengthened its investment in digital skills development by hosting an artificial intelligence (AI) and digital media masterclass at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), where 180 students gained insights into emerging technologies as the company seeks to prepare more young Kenyans for careers in the digital economy.

The session has brought together students from the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) programme and others recruited through the university’s campus outreach drive, as Samsung and JKUAT continue to build a pipeline of talent for the country’s digital economy. The initiative builds on the launch of the Samsung Innovation Campus at JKUAT in November last year, a strategic partnership that was set up to open fresh career paths for local students through practical technology training.

At the centre of the programme is the first cohort of 80 students, who have begun a three-month learning journey split into two categories. Forty students are studying Artificial Intelligence, while another 40 are enrolled in Advanced Coding and Programming. Instead of a short course certificate, participants will receive a formal diploma from JKUAT, giving the training academic recognition as well as industry relevance.

Dr. Lawrence Nderu, Head of the School of Computing and JHUB at JKUAT, said the partnership gives students a more practical route into the labour market at a time when AI is reshaping industries.

“This partnership with Samsung is incredibly special to us because it sees our students as individuals with distinct dreams. By blending our academic guidance with hands-on industry support through JHUB Africa, we are giving these 80 bright minds a real, practical stepping stone into the world, ensuring they graduate ready to make a tangible difference.” He said.

Additionally, the masterclass also included another 70 students who had been selected through an on-campus recruitment drive earlier in the term, adding to the wider audience of young people looking to strengthen their digital skills. The event’s main panel brought together photography and content creation specialist Edwin Waweru and Samsung Electronics East Africa Product Manager Ryan Mule for a discussions on visual storytelling, lighting, product innovation and the role of software tools in helping creators work more efficiently.

Students also heard from content creator Wololotv, who spoke about building a sustainable personal brand, growing an audience and producing digital media that stands out in a crowded online market. The event also featured Josephat Ochiel, Regional Service Manager at Samsung Electronics East Africa, who returned as a Samsung Innovation Campus alumnus and described how the programme helped shape his career in technology urging the students to use such golden opportunities to transform their careers.

According to Samsung, the initiative is part of its broader effort to strengthen digital literacy and financial independence among young people in Kenya, while supporting the next generation of innovators expected to shape the country’s technology and economic landscape.
