MTN Uganda has unveiled a new digital transport solution aimed at transforming how students commute to and from school, with a focus on safety, convenience, and cashless payments.
The initiative, named Cashless School Days, was launched at Kololo Secondary School and introduced wearable technology that allows students to access school transport services without carrying cash. The programme is part of MTN Uganda’s broader digital transformation agenda and seeks to address common challenges faced by students and parents, including transport delays, cash handling risks, and concerns over student safety during daily travel.
The solution is powered by MTN Business and utilizes smart wristbands that enable a tap-and-go transport experience. Students can register through QR codes or USSD and activate transport packages tailored to their commuting needs, whether on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.
Parents can make transport payments digitally through MoMo Uganda, reducing the need for cash transactions while providing greater convenience and oversight. The platform is expected to streamline transport management and offer families added confidence that students can travel more securely.
Speaking during the launch, MTN Uganda Enterprise Business Unit General Manager Ibrahim Senyonga said the initiative was developed to solve real-world challenges affecting school-going children and their families.
He noted that technology has the potential to simplify everyday experiences while creating safer environments for learners. Senyonga also challenged students to embrace innovation responsibly, describing them as key contributors to Uganda’s growing digital economy.
To showcase the system’s capabilities, students participated in a live demonstration, traveling between Kololo Secondary School and Lugogo using the cashless transport platform.
The launch convened stakeholders from the technology, mobility, financial services, and public sectors, underscoring the increasing role of digital solutions in improving essential services.
The initiative is being implemented through a partnership involving MoMo Uganda, EBus Xpress Kiira Ltd, HelloBooth, and Uganda’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Secretariat.
With Cashless School Days, MTN Uganda is positioning the school transport as a safer and more efficient service, while also supporting the wider shift toward digital payment, smart mobility, and greater financial inclusion for families and learners.
