Technology company Mara Group is seeking Kenyan blockchain developers

Pan-African technology company Mara group has announced plans to recruit Kenyan developers who will spearhead efforts to build a blockchain system to allow tracking of last-mile transactions on mobile money.

The company will be running the  “Hack the Mara” hackathon where competitors are expected to build sustainable solutions for last mile payment tracking. Winners will take home Ksh 11.8 million ($100,00) in funds and prizes.

Mara has been making its footprint in Africa with technology experiments that seek homegrown solutions. In 2020, the company launched Mara phones with the initial series dubbed Mara Z1 and Mara X1 finding their way into some African markets.

The move to recruit Kenyan developers comes ahead of the company’s plans to launch Mara Wallet later this year. The wallet will join other players in the growing cryptocurrency exchange market.

“Blockchain has the potential to take financial services and last mile payment solutions to new heights. With a direct focus on solving real local challenges, these innovators may create globally relevant solutions and drive the future of finance” said Chi Nnadi, Mara Co-founder and Chief executive Officer.

The hackathon is challenging developers to come up with blockchain solutions that can utilize USSD and M-Pesa for payment transparency.

Judges will be evaluating the projects on the basis of originality, creativity, analytical skills, strategic thinking and practical implementation.

“Blockchain for social impact is at the heart of everything we do at Mara. Through our non-profit foundation, our aim is to empower problem-solvers to build blockchain solutions which promote long-term beneficial, social and environmental change in Africa,” said Kate Kallot, Mara Group Co-Founder and Chief Impact Officer.
