Kenya’s largest telco Safaricom has today announced a new platform to help SMEs advertise their services. The new Skiza Mobile Advertising platform is part of the company’s long-term commitment to support SME recovery due to tough business conditions occasioned by the pandemic.
“We believe this platform will offer them an opportunity to access their customers who have limited their movements as a result of the increased infections,” the company said.
The telco is willing to share part of the revenue with its customers as well. Safaricom subscribers can opt into or out of the service by dialling *897# on their phone. Once enrolled, you will hear adverts in the place or ringtones as you wait for the recipient to pick up the call.
Safaricom will award enrolled customers either free 5 MB data or 1-minute calling time for every three adverts listened to for more than six seconds each.
Customers can also use the same USSD code for redeeming and checking award balances.
Accumulated points will be redeemable for free data or minutes with no expiry. However, the accumulated minutes and data are valid until the first day of every month and once redeemed assume a no-expiry validity on the customer’s line.

The company recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, where it announced plans to continue supporting SMEs across the country.
