Safaricom Celebrates 20th Birthday, Launches New Campaign

Kenya’s largest telco, Safaricom, is today celebrating its 20th birthday after officially being launched in the country on 23rd October 2000.

The celebration saw the company renew its commitment to serving its customers as it plans for the new decade ahead.

“In the past two decades, Safaricom has grown from a telecommunication service provider to a technology company, and our customers have been a key part of this journey. We are cognizant that technology and a data-driven economy can further support Kenya’s economic growth, and these will be our launchpad for the next 20 years,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom.

The company also announced a new campaign, ‘Twende Tukiuke’, which urges everyone to strive and go beyond what is deemed possible.

Safaricom says they’re committed to innovating and simplifying its products continually.

As it ushers its third decade in the market, the company’s first five years will be driven by a vision to become a purpose-led technology company.

The company vowed to continue supporting SMEs and Micro-SMEs by offering enhanced financial services and connectivity solutions.

“We plan to go beyond to new frontiers, be more present, more world-class, and enable new platforms to launch our SMEs into greater possibilities,” he added.

As part of its plans moving forward Safaricom plans to;

  • Serve 1 million homes and businesses with internet via fibre and 4G
  • Avail 4G across all parts of Kenya by the end of December 2020
  • Start providing data usage transparency reports to customers.
  • Launch of Pochi la Biashara to support SMEs
  • Aggregate all M-PESA services under the *334# USSD
  • Evolve M-PESA into a lifestyle platform and universal payment network on the continent under M-PESA Africa
