Airtel Records growth in Market Share by Voice Traffic


Airtel Kenya has recorded growth in market share by voice traffic to 16.8 per cent from 9.8 per cent in the year ended December. This is according to the latest statistics from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

According to the these statistics, Airtel also gained in the volume of minutes of usage with its 7.1 million customers making calls for 1.7 billion minutes translating to one billion minutes gain during the similar period.

Although the its’ s number share for SMS dropped by 0.5 per cent to stand at 8.2 per cent during the period under review, number of SMS sent from Airtel network increased to 669.4 million messages up from 612.0 million messages sent during the last quarter.

This growth in voice traffic and number of SMS on Airtel’s network could be attributed to the roll out of innovative propositions such as Airtel UnlimiNet that continues to gives its pre-paid customers the freedom and flexibility to choose from a wide range of affordable daily, weekly and monthly bundles- allowing users to enjoy minutes, voice calls and SMSs to any network. The product offers free WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter, making it more popular.  

In January this year, the company introduced a new “UnlimiNet 20 bundle”, that is the most affordable bundled offer for voice, SMS and data within the Airtel UnlimiNet plan.  The 20/- bundle which has a 24-hour validity period is packed with 20 MB data, 20 SMSs and 6 minutes of calls to any network.

The Company also introduced new weekly and monthly bundles on its UnlimiNet plan: with Ksh 50, customers get to enjoy 10 free minutes voice calls to any network, 50 free SMSs to any network and 65MB data weekly.  With Ksh. 500, customers get to enjoy, 100 free minutes voice calls to any network, and 500 free SMSs to any network and 1GB data monthly.
