TVS Motor enters Kenya with launch of iQube electric scooter
Indian two-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motor Company has launched its iQube electric scooter in Kenya, marking its first entry into the African market as rising fuel costs push more commuters toward electric mobility.
The scooter, unveiled in Nairobi in partnership with distributor Car & General, comes in two variants. The TVS iQube 3.5 carries two battery packs with an installed capacity of 3.5 kWh, giving a real-world range of 115 kilometres, while the TVS iQube 2.2 has a 2.2 kWh battery and a range of 75 kilometres. Both are fitted with a 4.6 kW hub-mounted motor with a top speed of 82 km/h and can be charged from a standard household socket.
TVS Motor is part of TVS VENU, ranked the world’s fourth-largest two-wheeler manufacturer. The company said the iQube has clocked more than 17.8 billion kilometres globally among over a million riders, helping avoid 623,595 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Peyman Kargar, President of International Business at TVS Motor Company, said the Kenya launch was part of the company’s global expansion into electric mobility. “This launch reflects our continued focus on expanding innovative electric solutions across international markets and signifies a key milestone in our global growth journey,” Kargar said.
Car & General Chief Executive Officer Vijay Gidoomal said Africa’s two-wheeler market is expanding at 7-10 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) through 2030, with the electric segment growing faster still, at 15-25 percent CAGR over the same period. He said EV penetration on the continent remained low relative to market size, leaving room for sustained growth.
TVS Motor said riders switching from a 125cc petrol scooter to the iQube could save about Sh47,000 a year in fuel and maintenance costs. The scooter also comes with the company’s SmartXonnect platform, offering navigation, telematics, anti-theft tracking, geofencing and crash alerts.
The iQube will be sold through Car & General’s dealer network, backed by a two-year or 30,000-kilometre warranty. Car & General has operated in Kenya for more than two decades and is TVS Motor’s long-standing distribution partner in the country.
The entry adds TVS to a growing list of manufacturers targeting Kenya’s electric two-wheeler segment, including Chinese firm Yadea, which entered the market earlier this year, and homegrown player Roam.
