Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event finally happed yesterday. The event saw the company unveil its new devices in the S series comprising the standard Galaxy S22, a slightly more expensive S22+ and the top-of-the-line S22 Ultra.
The Galaxy S22 succeeds the Galaxy S21 that the company officially unveiled in the local market back in January last year. The S22 and S22+ pricing start at $800 and $1,000, respectively, but for the S22 Ultra, you will have to shell out a cool $1,200. Samsung has not yet released the local pricing for the three devices. You will have to wait until 1st March when pre-orders are opened.
The three smartphones are equipped with the latest chipsets for high-end smartphones and feature AMOLED displays with a 120Hz refresh rate. Important to note that Samsung has also upped the charging speed for its Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra models, offering 45W wired charging.

Let’s look at each of the devices.
Galaxy S22
As I mentioned earlier, the S22 is the standard one here featuring a 6.1-inch full-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. The display also comes with Samsung’s Eye Comfort Shield for blue light control and an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate that can drop to as low as well, 10Hz. Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy S22 comes with an octa-core 4nm SoC paired with 8GB of RAM.
Samsung Galaxy S22 runs on Android 12 with One UI 4.1 on top and offers up to 256GB of onboard storage.
When it comes to the cameras, the Samsung Galaxy S22 features a triple rear camera setup that includes a 50-megapixel primary Dual Pixel wide-angle sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens and autofocus; a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture lens and a 120-degree field-of-view; and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with an f/2.4 aperture lens featuring 3x optical zoom and optical image stabilisation (OIS). There is also a 10-megapixel selfie camera at the front with an f/2.2 aperture lens and an 80-degree field-of-view.
For the battery, we’re getting a 3,700mAh battery that supports fast charging at 25. The smartphone also supports 15W wireless charging as well as Wireless PowerShare for reverse wireless charging
Galaxy S22+
The Galaxy S22+ on the other hand features a 6.6-inch full-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with support for Samsung’s Eye Comfort Shield for blue light control. Just like the S22, it also offers an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate.
Under the hood, the Galaxy S22+ has an octa-core 4nm SoC paired with up to 12GB of RAM and some 256GB of internal storage. The S22+ runs on Android 12 with One UI 4.1 on top.
For the cameras, we’re getting a triple rear camera setup that includes a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture lens and a 120-degree field-of-view. The phone also features a 50-megapixel primary Dual Pixel autofocus wide-angle sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens; and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, optical image stabilisation (OIS) and an f/2.4 aperture lens. There is a 10-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture lens and an 80-degree field-of-view in front for selfies.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 packs a 4,500mAh battery that supports fast charging at 45W, and also supports 15W wireless charging as well as Wireless PowerShare for reverse wireless charging.
Galaxy S22 Ultra
This is the most expensive one in this series and is the first S-series smartphone to feature an S Pen built into the phone’s body. This also means that Samsung might be officially be killing the Note series.
Unlike the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ which feature full-HD+ displays, the Galaxy S22 Ultra sports a large 6.8-inch Edge QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. This is also equipped with updated Wacom technology in to support the improvements to S Pen functionality including reduced latency.
The phone is powered by an octa-core 4nm SoC, paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and comes in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options.
The smartphone runs on Android 12 with One UI 4.1 on top.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is equipped with a larger 5,000mAh battery with support for fast charging at 45W, and just like the S22 and S22+, it also supports wireless charging at 15W along with Wireless PowerShare for reverse wireless charging.
Galaxy S22 Series Pricing and availability in Kenya
The Galaxy S22 Ultra 512 GB will retail at Ksh.159,999 while the S22 Ultra 256 GB will retail at Ksh. 148,999; Galaxy S22+ 256GB will retail at Ksh. 116,999 and the Galaxy S22 256 GB will retail at Ksh. 99,000.
The series will be available for pre-order in Kenya beginning 1st March 2022, and the pre-order period continues until 10th March 2022. Customers that pre-order and purchase the Galaxy S22 series during the pre-order period, will receive the Galaxy Buds 2 for free.
The S22 Ultra will be available in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green, and Burgundy while the S22+ will be available in Phantom Black, Green, Pink Gold and White and Burgundy. S22 on the other hand S22 will come in Phantom Black, Green, Pink Gold and White in and Burgundy colour options.
