On Wednesday, April 15, 2020, Apple announced a new iteration of its smallest iPhone since 2016, iPhone SE. It starts at just $399, despite shipping with iPhone 11 series Bionic A13 Chipset and sports iPhone 8’s iconic Home Button, large bezels, Touch ID combo design.
As usual to its iPhones, Apple donates a portion from Product Red sales to help in fighting HIV/AIDS, but they’re doing it differently this time around, considering the turmoil in the world.
Apple says that it will donate a portion of proceeds from iPhone SE Product Red purchases to the Global COVID-19 Relief Fund tasked with “providing funding to countries in need of PPE, diagnostics treatment, lab equipment, public safety communications, supply chain support and more”
From now through September 30th, the company will donate a portion of product red sales from gadgets to accessories including iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands as well as the recently announced second-generation iPhone SE.
“Every iPhone SE (PRODUCT)RED purchase now contributes directly to the Global Fund to combat COVID-19,” the company said.
Product Red has been around for a while, founded by Red in partnership with major companies like Starbucks, Nike, and Apple to help deal with HIV/AIDS in Africa. Apple has been the largest corporate donor to Product Red with over $220 million channeled to the initiative since 2006.
But since the world is now in arms fighting a new enemy – a pandemic – it only makes sense for the company to chip in. Apple has been active in the fight against coronavirus.
The company, together with one of its biggest rivals, if not biggest, Google has released a contact tracking system. Apple has also donated over US$7 million in China to help fight the pandemic. Besides, towards the end of March, Apple donated 10 million masks to health professionals in the US and Europe.
