More Kenyans Take Up Fixed Internet Services

The latest Sector Statistics report from the Communication Authority of Kenya is out, detailing how various ICT industry sectors performed during the October – December quarter.

According to the report, more Kenyans are taking up fixed broadband services. The number of net additions increasing during the three-month period. Nevertheless, the net additions increased by a meager 4.6 percent.

A total of 674,191 Kenyans were connected to Fixed data at the end of 2020. This represented a 4.6 increase in the number of subscriptions from the third quarter of the year. Total subscriptions stood at 644,816 in Q3, according to the September statistics report released January 2020.

Fiber to the home/Office accounted for most subscriptions, with 400,350 total connections or approximately 60 percent of all connections.

Again, the majority of connections subscribed to between at least 2Mbps(Megabits per second) and less than 10Mbps, followed by between 10Mbps to less than 30Mbps and then those paying for between =>30 Mbps and <100Mbps.

Cable Modem is the second most popular type of broadband connection used by Kenyans. It accounted for 26. 4 percent of all broadband connections in the country during the period. The number of connections by speed for Cable Modem is a similar story to FTTH/O.

Fixed wireless was the third most popular type of connection with 92,746 subscribers.

Fixed Broadband Market Share by Service Provider

From the previous report, Safaricom increased its market share by adding 22,000 net subscribers, cementing lead ahead of Wananchi Group Ltd, owner of Zuku, which only added hundreds.

This time around, the report didn’t include fixed data subscriptions per Service Provider – and their respective market shares. Thus it’s hard to pinpoint how the market stood at the end of 2020. The excluded statistics was a key metric that has helped showcase how various market players’ businesses performed.

Kenya’s International Bandwidth

Finally, the total International Internet bandwidth available increased 2.7 percent to 8,091.43Gbps.
