Airtel Africa adds 3,250 sites and 3,200km of fibre in a year

Over the past year, Airtel Africa says it has added more than 3,250 network sites and 3,200 kilometres of fibre. The telco says it will keep investing in its network, new technologies and partnerships to improve service for its 183.5 million customers.

The company gave the update at the start of Customer Service Week 2026, themed “The Extra Mile”. Alongside network expansion, it has invested in retail outlets, other distribution channels, and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to improve customers’ digital experience.

Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar said the theme reflects the company’s focus on understanding and responding to customer needs.

“The theme of this year’s events, ‘The Extra Mile,’ is aligned with our unwavering commitment to always go the extra mile for our customers by transforming their experience, listening to them, learning from them and acting on their needs and expectations,” said Taldar.

“By digitising our services and broadening access to connectivity, we are helping to unlock extraordinary opportunities for people, businesses and economies across the continent.”

Taldar pointed to Airtel Africa’s recent commercial launch of direct-to-device satellite connectivity in underserved rural communities. The service lets customers with compatible smartphones stay connected in areas that terrestrial mobile networks do not reach, as long as they have a clear view of the sky.

The operator is also using AI to tackle fraud. Its AI-powered Spam Alert service is free to all subscribers. It identifies and blocks suspected spam SMS messages and sends users real-time updates, which helps protect them from potentially fraudulent messages.

During Customer Service Week, Airtel Africa employees will join frontline teams in the company’s 14 markets to meet customers, gather feedback and look for ways to make its services more reliable.

The company said its investments are aimed at expanding coverage and capacity to drive digital and financial inclusion across Africa.
