MTN Ghana gets new 700 MHz and 3 GHz spectrum worth $202 million to strengthen its 5G network

MTN Ghana has been told it will receive fresh spectrum in the 700MHz and 3 GHz bands, a package worth roughly $202 million that the company says will strengthen its 5G coverage and mobile broadband network across the country.

The notice of award from the Ghana National Communications Authority (NCA). The licenses will run for 15 years once they’re formally issued. MTN Ghana is currently working through the required formalities and payments to complete the acquisition.

In the 700 MHz band, the operator will receive two 20 MHz lots, priced at about $100.9 million. In the 3 GHz band, it will receive a single 150 MHz block, valued at about $101.1 million. Together, the two awards add up to just over $200 million.

The company has already accounted for the cost. MTN Ghana said the license payments are built into its equity free cash flow outlook, which suggests the spending should not catch investors or analysts off guard.

Once the licences are in hand, MTN Ghana plans to run the new airwaves alongside the spectrum it already holds. In practical terms, that should mean more network capacity, steadier service quality and a smoother experience for subscribers, particularly in busy areas where congestion tends to slow things down.

The extra spectrum is also central to the company’s push to widen 5G access for mobile users and to bring high-speed broadband into more homes. The 700 MHz band is generally valued for its ability to cover large areas and reach indoors, while the 3 GHz band is known for delivering the high speeds and capacity that 5G depends on. Combining the two gives the operator room to serve both wide area coverage and heavy data demand.

The announcement lands at a symbolic time. MTN is marking 30 years of operations in Ghana, a milestone that has seen the company grow from an early market entrant into one of the country’s largest telecom providers.

MTN Group and MTN Ghana have said they will keep the public informed of any material developments as the rollout of the newly awarded spectrum and its high-speed 5G services moves forward.
