MTN’s MoMo cloud migration sets the stage for faster, more scalable digital finance

MTN Group Fintech has completed the migration of its Mobile Money (MoMo) platform to a cloud-native architecture in Eswatini, Ghana, Rwanda and Uganda, a move aimed at improving performance and supporting the expansion of digital financial services across Africa.

The migration, carried out with technology provider Ericsson, moves MTN MoMo from a legacy virtualized environment to the Ericsson Fintech Platform’s cloud-native infrastructure.

MTN said the upgraded platform has already delivered significant performance gains across the four markets. CPU processing overhead and database load have fallen by as much as 86%, while some API response times are now up to 80% faster.

The changes are designed to help MTN handle growing transaction volumes while improving the reliability and responsiveness of its mobile money services. The platform also provides a foundation for expanding digital financial services to consumers, merchants and other ecosystem partners.

For customers and businesses using MoMo, the infrastructure upgrade is expected to support faster transactions and smoother integration with digital financial services. For developers and merchants, improved API performance could make it easier to connect their services to MTN’s mobile money ecosystem.

The migration is part of MTN Group’s broader strategy to broaden its fintech operations and strengthen its digital financial infrastructure. Similar work is already underway in Cameroon, while MTN and Ericsson are considering extensions to Benin, the Republic of the Congo and Zambia. Some MTN operating companies are also assessing the use of public cloud infrastructure.

The move comes as mobile money continues to play an important role in expanding access to financial services across African markets. MTN is moving its infrastructure to cloud-native technology to build a more scalable platform that can support growing demand and new digital financial products.

Ultimately, the two companies have worked together on mobile financial services for more than a decade, with the latest migration expected to support further development of MTN’s fintech business as the group expands its digital financial services footprint across the continent.
