Carrefour Kenya has collaborated with KCB Bank Kenya and Mastercard to launch a new prepaid payment card designed at helping customers better plan and manage their grocery budgets while reducing reliance on cash.
The new Carrefour Prepaid Card allows customers to set spending limits for groceries, monitor expenses and ensure money allocated for household essentials is used as intended. The initiative is aimed to give customers greater control over their day-to-day spending while providing access to exclusive Carrefour rewards and discounts.
Additionally, the card targets a wide range of users, including families managing shared household budgets and people supporting relatives from within Kenya or abroad. Customers can reload the card using any bank card through Mastercard’s payment gateway, making it easier to send funds specifically for grocery purchases.
According to Christophe Orcet, Regional Director Carrefour East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, the prepaid solution is intended to simplify household budgeting by combining the convenience of digital payments with tools that help customers track and control their spending.
Commenting on the launch, Jane Isiaho, Director of Retail at KCB Bank Kenya said the partnership expands digital payment options for its customers while offering a practical alternative to cash. The bank noted that the card is supported by 24/7 customer service and can be used across all Carrefour stores in Kenya.
Customers can register for the Carrefour Prepaid Card at Carrefour stores through assisted sign-ups or via digital channels. The roll out also includes introductory offers such as cashback and reward points for new users.
Shehryar Ali, Senior Vice President and Country Manager for East Africa and Indian Ocean Islands at Mastercard, said the collaboration aligns with their efforts to expand secure and accessible digital payment solutions in Kenya while reinforcing the adoption of cashless transactions.
Ultimately, the launch highlighted the growing focus by retailers and financial institutions on developing payment solutions that help consumers manage household expenses more effectively while supporting Kenya’s ongoing shift toward digital payments.
