Ethio Telecom and Huawei are expanding their long-standing partnership as the state-owned telecommunications operator seeks to accelerate digital transformation for businesses and strengthen Ethiopia’s growing digital economy.
The renewed collaboration will see the companies work together on a broader range of digital services beyond traditional telecommunications infrastructure, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and enterprise digital solutions.
The initiative supports Ethio Telecom’s Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028 strategy, which aims to position the operator as a technology-driven digital services provider while increasing digital adoption among enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Among the partnership’s priorities is helping Ethiopian businesses adopt integrated digital solutions that improve efficiency and competitiveness. The companies plan to combine connectivity with AI, cloud services, data centre infrastructure and cybersecurity tools to support digital transformation across industries.
Small businesses are also expected to benefit through an expanded digital ecosystem built around telebirr, Ethio Telecom’s mobile financial services platform. Future offerings are expected to integrate digital payments, financial services, e-commerce capabilities and business management tools into a single ecosystem designed to simplify operations for SMEs.
As demand for locally relevant technology grows, the partners are also looking to increase software development and engineering capacity within Ethiopia. Greater collaboration on solution development, systems integration and research is intended to speed up the delivery of products tailored to local market requirements rather than relying solely on imported technologies.
Device affordability also featured prominently in the discussions, with both companies exploring financing models that could make smartphones more accessible. Increasing smartphone ownership is viewed as a key step toward expanding digital inclusion and enabling more people and businesses to participate in the country’s digital economy.
Alongside commercial initiatives, Ethio Telecom and Huawei intend to collaborate on programmes that promote digital literacy, improve rural connectivity and expand access to digital education, while supporting the development of sustainable digital infrastructure.
Huawei also reiterated its support for Ethio Telecom’s ambition to evolve into a technology company offering a broader portfolio of digital services. The firm said it sees opportunities to work with the operator not only in Ethiopia but also in supporting future regional expansion as demand for digital services continues to grow across Africa.
The latest move reflects a broader trend among African telecom operators that are increasingly shifting beyond connectivity to become providers of cloud, fintech, AI and enterprise technology services as governments and businesses accelerate digital transformation.
