KCB Bank has expanded its Islamic banking portfolio with the launch of a Shariah-compliant payment card in partnership with Mastercard, alongside a dedicated agency banking network aimed at improving access to Islamic financial services across Kenya.
The new Sahl Card, introduced under KCB’s Sahl Banking proposition, is designed to offer Muslim customers a secure and convenient way to make everyday payments while adhering to Islamic finance principles. At the same time, the bank has rolled out the Sahl Agency Banking network, enabling customers to access key banking services such as cash withdrawals, deposits and bill payments through authorized agents.
Furthermore, the launch comes as demand for ethical and faith-based financial products continues to grow, with banks increasingly tailoring services to underserved customer segments seeking alternatives that align with their religious and financial values.
According to KCB Group Director of Strategy and Innovation, Mark Mwongela, the bank is focused on developing financial products that address the evolving needs of its customers while broadening access to Shariah-compliant banking.
“We remain committed to developing financial solutions that reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of our customers. The Sahl Card represents an important step in expanding access to Shariah-compliant banking solutions by providing customers with a secure, convenient and values-driven payment option that supports their everyday financial and lifestyle needs,” he said.
Beyond facilitating day-to-day transactions, the Sahl Card offers a range of travel and lifestyle benefits through Mastercard’s global network. Customers holding Mastercard World Elite and Gold Credit Cards will be eligible for discounts and offers across accommodation, dining, shopping and leisure experiences in participating destinations.
Additionally, Eligible World Elite cardholders will also gain access to The Mastercard Collection, a premium lifestyle programme featuring curated travel experiences, dining privileges and exclusive rewards available in selected markets.
Speaking on the partnership, Shehryar Ali, Senior Vice President and Country Manager for East Africa and Indian Ocean Islands at Mastercard, said the collaboration is intended to support greater financial inclusion by providing payment solutions that reflect customers’ beliefs and lifestyles.
“We are actively powering an inclusive digital economy where every individual and community can pay with confidence. Our collaboration with KCB gives consumers a payment solution built around their values and lifestyle. By combining our global network with KCB’s deep local expertise, we are connecting the Islamic banking community to the experiences and passions that matter most to them,” he added.
Ultimately, the Sahl Card also includes spending management tools, transaction notifications, concierge services and a card design inspired by Islamic themes. Combined with the newly introduced Sahl Agency Banking network, KCB says the offering is intended to make Shariah-compliant banking services more accessible while giving customers greater flexibility in managing their finances.
