More than 2,700 young Kenyans have completed a national digital media training programme aimed at preparing them for careers in the country’s fast-growing creative and digital economy, as the government steps up efforts to tackle youth unemployment through digital skills development.
The five-day hybrid training, named the Jitume Digital Media Tools Sensitization Workshop, was organized by the Technopolis Development Authority (formerly Konza Technopolis Development Authority) and attracted participants from across the country. The programme focused on equipping young people with practical skills in photography, videography, graphic design, video editing and social media management, while also exposing them to emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The training was conducted at the Jitume Digital Media Factory at Nairobi’s General Post Office (GPO) in partnership with the Kenya Film Commission, Postal Kenya and Genesis Design Factory.
Speaking during the graduation, Technopolis Development Authority Chief Executive Officer, John Paul Okwiri said the nearly 3,000 registrations reflected rising interest in careers within Kenya’s creative economy. He said the programme had brought together photographers, videographers, graphic designers, content creators and social media managers to sharpen their technical skills, build professional networks and better understand industry expectations.
Okwiri also added that expanding similar initiatives across the country would help strengthen the creative sector and create more opportunities for young people.
Unlike conventional technical training, the workshop introduced participants to the broader business ecosystem surrounding creative work. Industry practitioners guided trainees through professional workflows, AI-powered creative tools, freelancing opportunities and entrepreneurship models that are increasingly shaping the digital economy.
The graduation ceremony brought together government officials, industry players, academic institutions, technology partners and development organizations, providing participants with an opportunity to showcase their work, engage potential employers and connect with professionals in the sector.
Furthermore, exhibitions of photography, videography and graphic design projects formed part of the event alongside panel discussions on the future of creative work, recognition of outstanding participants and networking sessions designed to bridge the gap between emerging talent and industry.
Officials said the programme contributed to increasing awareness of career opportunities in the creative economy while strengthening links between young professionals and potential employers. Participants also gained a deeper understanding of how AI is transforming creative industries and explored pathways into freelancing, self-employment and digital entrepreneurship.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader Jitume Digital Enablement Programme, which seeks to expand access to digital opportunities by equipping young people with market-relevant digital skills and innovation capabilities. Through a network of digital hubs and specialized learning centers, the programme aims to build a workforce capable of supporting Kenya’s growing digital economy while promoting inclusion and innovation.
