Visa Introduces Apple Pay in Mauritius
Visa has introduced Apple Pay to its cardholders in Mauritius. The service is currently available to Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) Visa cardholders, with additional banks expected to be added in the near future.
Apple Pay offers users an easy, secure, and private way to make payments in-store, in-app, and online. For in-store purchases, customers can simply double-click the side button, authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode, and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a contactless payment terminal. Each transaction is secured through a unique, one-time dynamic security code.
The service is widely accepted across grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, coffee shops, retail outlets, and other merchants supporting contactless payments.
“The launch of Apple Pay in Mauritius is an important milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey and reflects the growing demand for secure, seamless, and mobile-first payment experiences,” said Yared Endale, Visa’s Head of Eastern Africa.
“At Visa, we are proud to work closely with companies to enable globally proven technologies that are both trusted and scalable, supporting the continued growth of digital commerce and reinforcing Mauritius’ position as a forward-looking financial hub in the Indian Ocean region.” he added.
Customers can also use Apple Pay on iPhone, iPad, and Mac to make faster, more convenient purchases within apps and on the web, without the need to repeatedly enter account details, card information, or shipping and billing data.
Security and privacy remain central to Apple Pay. When a credit or debit card is added, the actual card number is neither stored on the device nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is created, encrypted, and securely stored in the device’s Secure Element, a certified chip designed to protect payment information.
Apple Pay is simple to set up. On iPhone, users can open the Wallet app, tap the “+” icon, and follow the steps to add their Visa credit or debit card. Once added, the card can be used instantly across compatible Apple devices, including Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac. Users continue to enjoy all rewards and benefits associated with their Visa cards.
The launch also highlights Visa’s ongoing collaboration with leading financial institutions in Mauritius to deliver innovative payment experiences aligned with changing consumer needs. The company says it continues to invest in technologies such as tokenization to enable secure, scalable, and interoperable digital payments globally.
